Movie Review
Scarlett O’Hara remains one of the most (in)famous heroines of all time. It earned Vivien Leigh her first Academy Award as a fiery southern belle determined to survive the chaos and confusion of the Civil War. Even though Gone with the Wind remains a cinematic landmark, some people might not know that Bette Davis played a different southern belle in Jezebel the year before.
A Toast!
Bette Davis definitely deserved the Academy Award for her leading role as Julie. The cinematography is gorgeous, and the score is sumptuous thanks to the brilliant music that Max Steiner composed. Fay Bainter also excels in her supporting role as “Aunt Belle Massey.” The film overall is wildly romantic!
Verdict
Bette Davis might have lost the opportunity to play Scarlett O’Hara, but film lovers will always remember her as a southern belle that is just as spiteful as the Biblical “Jezebel.”
