Amy Seimetz has only directed three films to this point, but her influence on the indie world feels so much greater, both for her acting in high-profile indie projects and her association with former indie wunderkind Shane Carruth, although this week revealed some troubling news there.

She Dies Tomorrow begins with Amy (Kate Lyn Sheil) clearly having a very bad night, falling off the wagon, then insisting to her friend Jane (Jane Adams) with complete certainty that she’s going to die tomorrow. Next we know, Jane is also quite sure she’s going to die tomorrow- and it’s spreading from there…
A Toast
Seimetz, who also wrote the film, has crafted a film around a great idea, one which is super-resonant in these COVID-19 times, moreso than anyone involved could have guessed (ironically, this would have premiered at SXSW this year… which was cancelled due to COVID). If you can’t see the horror behind catching a mysterious plague from the pizza guy and then unwillingly passing it to many more folks you don’t even know, then I want to know where you’ve been the last six months.
This film also boats a truly surprising cast of ringers- you’ll just have to see who pops up, I’m not gonna tell ya.
I also have to call out how Seimetz delivers some impressively creepy imagery, especially when the neon lights strobe across Kate Lyn Sheil’s face as she draws ever closer to them. It’s uncanny.
Beer Two
Also par for the course for some of the folks involved with this film, this is definitely a mumblecore product- full of seemingly ad-libbed dialogue that probably needed about 10 more rehearsals to really feel natural. Perhaps that unnaturalness is the point- certainly in one central scene I can see why- but I didn’t find it the good kind of off-putting.
Beer Three
Despite some clever visual ideas, the majority of the film is shot with flat, ugly digital photography- you know you can basically shoot an entire professional-looking film on an iPhone these days, right?
Verdict
She Dies Tomorrow is a creepy indie psychological horror with a conceit that’s far too familiar in our current quarantined lives.
