American literature oftentimes reflects the society of the land of the free. The famed author, Henry James, left an indelible mark on the American literary landscape. His classic novel, The Bostonians, beautifully explores psychological realism, and so did its subsequent film adaptation.
A Toast!
Set in 1875, this is one of the best films that James Ivory directed. Not only is this film a classic, but it also features a distinguished cast that includes Christopher Reeve, Vanessa Redgrave, and Jessica Tandy. Like many period dramas, the costumes are sumptuous. Besides the visual appeal, the dialogue is also brilliant as a result of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s screenplay. Both the original and this film reveal a lot about political feminism.
Verdict
Boston has a unique place in American history, and so has the novel, The Bostonians.
