I try and catch a flick from New Zealand every TIFF- there’s always at least one- and they rarely disappoint. When I saw there was one this year also featuring Simon Rex, I was in.
God Bless You, Mr. Kopu follows Mr. Mafu Kopu, a down on his luck New Zealander of Tongan heritage who gets a job as a door to door cleaning solution salesman under the tutelage of the oily and charismatic Marco (Simon Rex himself).
A Toast
We open with a video advertisement for a door-to-door sales job whose 80s aesthetics are gloriously scuzzy, as is its spokesman played by none other than Simon Rex, who is scuzzy as only Simon Rex can scuzz. He’s got one of those systems that promise wealth to anyone who can shill his overpriced terrible products- in this case a stain cleaner of some kind.
Our protagonist is actually Mr. Kopu, though, Rex’s young Tongan mark who is guilty about turning away from his native culture and embracing the ways of the West, perhaps perfectly embodied by the unscrupulous capitalistic conman he’s found himself in business with. He’s may not feel good about it, but he goes along with Rex in selling this overpriced product nobody actually needs to his countrymen who don’t have appeared to have found the grass in New Zealand to be particularly greener.
And then there’s a twist! You haven’t seen a descent into unscrupulousness play out quite like this before, and after the plot takes its big turn, the movie positively barrels to a pretty amazingly acted final showdown.
Beer Two
This scene where they talk to a rich old coot who’s uniquely resistant to their schtick goes on forever and ever. It turns out there’s perhaps a reason for that, or at least some additional layers at play, but still.
Verdict
God Bless You, Mr. Kopu is a twisty thriller about a Tongan New Zealander who meets the American door-to-door salesman from Hell.
